# Template Exporting
|

|
|
Open **Console > Import/Export > Export Templates**, choose the object type,
|
|
then select the template to export. Select **Include Dependencies** when the
|
|
recipient needs its referenced objects. Choose the output option to display
|
|
XML or download it as a file.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Each template component has a persistent hash identity. Import uses it to
|
|
match objects across installations. The historical Linux example below
|
|
illustrates the XML structure; it is not a current, self-contained import
|
|
fixture. Generate a complete export from your own installation rather than
|
|
copying omitted or legacy dependencies.
|
|
|
|
An export with dependencies can include:
|
|
|
|
1. The device template name and its identity
|
|
2. All the Graph Templates and their GUID's
|
|
3. All the Graph Template inputs and their GUID's
|
|
4. All the Data Templates and their GUID's
|
|
5. All the Data Input Method's and their GUID's
|
|
6. All the GPrint Presets and their GUID's
|
|
7. All the CDEF's and VDEF's and their GUID's
|
|
8. All the Data Source Profiles and their GUID's
|
|
|
|
Most fields use XML escaping. Data-input command strings can be
|
|
base64-encoded; decode only fields defined that way by the format. For
|
|
example, the path placeholder is stored as `<path_cacti>` in XML, not
|
|
as an unclosed element.
|
|
|
|
Template export writes XML. Preserve object hashes when sharing an update: they
|
|
identify the objects to update on import. The compatibility prefix is described
|
|
in [Determine a Template Version](How-To-Determine-Template-Version.md).
|
|
|
|
Select **Include Dependencies** when the recipient needs referenced templates,
|
|
queries, profiles, CDEFs or VDEFs. Ordinary template XML does not bundle the
|
|
external scripts or query XML files; install those separately or use a signed
|
|
package workflow. Review the import preview on a separate test installation
|
|
before distributing an update that changes existing objects.
